Description

From the Eugene and Clare Thaw Collection

“Eugene and Clare Thaw assembled their American Indian Collection from the inspiration of strong personal interests in art. Their choice of objects was dictated first and foremost by an experienced connoisseurship. They made careful selections in which each possible purchase had to compare well with other known examples of a similar object. Each item had to appeal to them in relation to design, craftsmanship, and color. Surface patina, specifically a mellowed sense of use and age, was an overriding concern. Secondly, they respected the ethical standards of the time and avoided any sensitive material, such as undocumented excavated material or anything directly associated with human remains. The condition of each object was an important consideration, as was the exhibition and ownership history. As the collection and their knowledge grew, they expanded their concept of acquiring individual works of art to creating a representative group of objects.”
