Next! Readings of New Works by Regional Playwrights

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, New York, is pleased to re-open its annual call for new plays as part of NEXT! Readings of New Works by Regional Playwrights taking place in early 2020.

The Artistic Directors of Fenimore Art Museum’s resident theater company, Glimmer Globe Theatre, and the Manager of Performing Arts Programs will anonymously select three outstanding works on the basis of their literary and artistic merit. The selected plays/playwrights will receive a staged reading in the Fenimore Art Museum’s Auditorium as part of their winter programming schedule in early 2020.

Fenimore Art Museum’s Manager of Performing Arts Programs will work closely with each individual playwright to assign a director, cast the show, run rehearsals on-site, market the event, and execute the performance.

Readings will be free – with a suggested donation – and open to the public.  Following the reading, there will be an audience discussion with the cast, director, and playwright, allowing for all artists involved to answer questions and receive constructive feedback.

Fenimore Art Museum is committed to fostering appreciation for the arts in all its forms.  This is an exciting opportunity for talented regional playwrights to gain support and exposure for the important, but often overlooked, work that they do. The program aims to raise the profile of live theater in Central New York, providing people of all ages with a unique chance to witness and engage in the creative process, and developing the perception of theater as an essential tool for communication and understanding.

Submission Details:  Submissions must have a minimum runtime of 30 minutes, and a maximum runtime of approximately 2 hours. All genres are welcome!  Due to the large volume of submissions, entries are limited to one full-length play or collection of short works per playwright. Scripts may be submitted at any time during season but must be received by December 31, 2019 to qualify for consideration for a reading in early 2020. Anyone residing within 100 miles of Cooperstown, New York may submit.  Please email scripts and inquiries to Michael Tamburrino at [email protected] or call (607) 547-1453.
