Scope and Content Note

This collection contains materials from the lives of Floyd Spicer Armstrong and his ancestors, especially the Armstrong, Spicer, and Brace families. Most of it originated from the Plainfield / West Winfield area of New York State, near the border of Otsego and Herkimer Counties. The collection consists primarily of photographs, diaries, account books, and correspondence. It documents work and home life, although these tend to be intertwined considering the predominance of farming as an occupation. Floyd Spicer Armstrong, as well as his father Roy, and grandfather Floyd E., all ran the family farm, for instance, and are represented extensively with account books and/or diaries. Minor Spicer, on the other hand, was a lawyer, and the collection contains a noteworthy amount of correspondence between him and his son, Myron Arlington Spicer. Floyd Spicer Armstrong, from whose estate much of the collection was gathered, is the one individual represented the most fully, particularly in the extensive collection of his diaries. He either created or collected almost all materials dated after about 1935.
