Scope and Content Note

Account books and daybooks, 1834-1881, of a general store run by the Chadeayne family in Cornwall, Orange County, New York. Account books, daybooks, and journals, 1841-1894, of other businesses owned or operated by the Chadeaynes, or in which they had a financial interest, including insurance, real estate, money-lending, and the newspaper business. Account books, daybooks, and journals, 1837-1916, of other Cornwall businessmen, including an attorney, carriage and sleigh maker, farmer, general merchant, surveyor, and tailor. Account books, 1870s, of Salmon’s Dock, Cornwall Landing, N.Y., which record Hudson River shipments.

Register of manufacturers, retail outlets, and professional people in New York City and the mid-Hudson Valley, kept by H.F. Chadeayne, 1884-1887. Diaries kept by H.F. Chadeayne, 1873-1884, and his sons, 1871-1882, which discuss business and family matters, the weather, and politics. Town of Cornwall records include a tax roll, 1909, and a justice court docket of Justice Morrison, 1837-1839. Also various ledgers kept by the Chadeaynes when they started their businesses in the 1820s, later used as scrapbooks for clippings about politics, economics, and social life in Cornwall during the 19th century.
