Biographical Note

Mary Ann (Thurston) Duroe was born on February 22, 1847 in New Lisbon, Otsego County, N.Y. Her husband, C.R. (Collingwood Rodney) Duroe, was born on March 16, 1846 in Norwich, Chenango County, N.Y. They married in Norwich in 1870, and were primarily an agricultural family. Of their [nine?] children, those mentioned most prominently in the correspondence and diaries are Vernon Everett Duroe, Addison Elias Duroe, Francis John (Frank) Duroe, Ruth Helen Duroe, Laura Eliza Duroe, Jane Duroe, and Mary Ann Duroe. C.R. died on June 8, 1919 and Mary Ann (Thurston) Duroe probably died on February 1, 1928.

Scope and Content Note

The Duroe family correspondence and diaries discuss family and social life, farming, other work, weather, travel, and other local topics, mostly in Chenango and Otsego Counties, N.Y., 1875-1939. While most of the diaries are the work of Mary Ann (Thurston) Duroe, the correspondence was written primarily by four different Duroe family members, along with others, including some non-relatives. Family members were not generally referred to by their full names, particularly in the diaries, but instead by initials or nicknames.

Series Descriptions

Series 1 – Diaries. 1875-1958. 1 cu. ft. (1 box).

Mary Ann (Thurston) Duroe kept most of the diaries. After her 1928 death, one of her children (most likely L. Eliza) continued making entries in her mother’s last volume, and then produced at least three more of her own. Additionally, the 1892-1897 diary was primarily written by Mary’s husband, C.R. Duroe. This series also contains some ephemera of Vernon E. Duroe, 1942-1958. Arranged alphabetically.

Series 2 – Correspondence. 1894-1928. 1.5 cu. ft. (2 boxes).

The correspondence is generally between Duroe family members, with many envelopes containing letters from more than one person. The primary letter writers were sisters Ruth H., Jane, L. Eliza, and their mother, Mary Ann (Thurston) Duroe. Most of the letters were sent to Mary Ann (Thurston) Duroe and Ruth H. Duroe. The former was referred to as either Mrs. C.R. Duroe or Mary Ann Duroe. Of note are the letters Ruth H. wrote while living in Gloversville, N.Y. during World War I. She worked as an Emergency Home Demonstration Agent for New York State agencies, trying to prevent war-related food supply problems. Ruth H. lived and worked in several places in the 1910s, and her letters were sent most frequently to her mother. All of the letters in this series were written before Mary Ann (Thurston) Duroe’s 1928 death. Arranged alphabetically by letter recipient.
