Description Karuk, Yurok, Hupa or Wiyot Tobacco Basket; Medium/Materials: Twine, bear grass, maidenhair fern, spruce root and hazel sticks; Marks: Metal rimmed tag in black ballpoint ink "1661/KAROK W/ LID"; on reverse a rectangular stick in blue ballpoint pen "5219" [or possibly] "S219".;

History Scholarly Attributions: [1] Letter from Craig Bates - 18 November 1997 - "On baskets T484, T485a,b, T486, T487, T488; all of them could as likely be Karuk, Yurok or Hupa, or, perhaps, even Wiyot. I know of no way to differentiate between the baksets of these groups, and elderly weavers I spoke with back in the early 1970s told me the same thing." [2] Coleen Kelley Marks' comments - March 1996 - Crossed out Klamath in Klamath River and wrote Trinity. "spruce root and hazel sticks" "Snake's nose design."
