| History |
Scholarly Attributions:
[1] Joyce Szabo identified the artist as Wohaw (or Wo-Haw) and the location of Fort Marion. GVT - 12 August 1996. [2] Letter from Janet Berlo - 4 August 1996 discussing the gallery labels: "Ledger drawings. As I mentioned to you last week in regard to the two labeled "Wo-Haw 1875-78:" absolutely not. I know Wo-Haw's work better than any other ledger artist. Most of it is in St. Louis. For his Fort Marion style, see Moira Harris, BETWEEN TWO CULTURES: KIOWA ART FROM FORT MARION (Pogo Press, 1989) which illustrates all his known works. // Is there some reason it is labeled Wo-Haw or is it someone's attribution? If there is firm documentary evidence linking it to Wo-Haw (who died in 1924) it would have to be late. We know of no post-fort Marion works by him. And no matter who did these drawings, they were not done at Fort Marion. They are in the style of works done in Kiowa territory by Silverhorn and others in the 1880s and 90s. In particular, that 3-dimensional deer form is not seen in Kiowa drawings until thelate 1880s, in the work of Silverhorn." |
