Letter from George Hamell - 16 April 1994 - "There are two or three ceramic, elbow-shaped pipes in the State Museum's collection whose bowls are in the form of a clenched fist. All were found in Central New York and probably date to the later 16th century. The clenched human fist motif appears as early as the mid-17th century on Seneca wooden ladles; also, on Seneca and Iroquois canes of the 19th century." |
