History Scholarly Attributions: [1] Allen Wardwell - June 1996 "Odd piece, beautiful carving, has shamanic symbolism, death head images - frog, cranelike bird. May not be a frontlet. Needs discussion. It may be a shaman's maskette. Nothing else like it known." [2] Letter from Jack [Curtright] to Tad [Taylor Dale], n.d. - "Note Frontal Headdress from Malaspina Expedition. Similar dimensions. In talking with Bill Holm in regards to my headdress he felt that it was 1825 or earlier. He commented on the pierce work or cut out motif. He felt the piece was Tlingit. He normally doesn't respond to a piece with much animalism but this one he tried to hang on the wall with his frontlets. His response was this piece is much older and technically a headdress."
Used Tlingit
