[1] Pre-Sept 1996 entry by A. Whiteford: "This Zuni ceremonial pot follows a type which developed after the 1860s usually features small frogs emerging from the shoulders as if from a clay bottom. There is a notable exception here, however; with this high shouldered ceramic the frogs are replaced by three owl heads. While frogs are associated with water symbology, the meaning of the owl is thus far elusive, as no other examples so decorated are known. The high shoulder and relatively sparse treatment of the matte-painted designs suggests a relatively early date for this pot in comparison to most others of the general type." |
