History Scholarly Attributions: Letter from Joyce M. Szabo to Toby Herbst dated 13 September 1993 - "Two pages [only T84 acquired] froman unlined drawing book bear images, rendered in a combination of lead pencil and crayon, on each side. These image were most certainly made during the period of confinement of seventy-two southern Plains prisoners at Fort Marion in Saint Augustine, Florida, between May of 1875 and April of 1878. The inscription page provides a date of October 1876; this is very likely the date of the purchase of this drawing book by its original owner. Such inscriptions are frequent in Fort Marion books and, while this is no guarantee of the date of the actual creation of the drawings, it at least provides a general time period for discussion. By the fall of 1876, Fort Marion art had reached its highest point in creative outpouring and experimental exploration of multiple themes, both those illustrating the life the prisoners led in Florida. The four images under question fall well sithin the range of work known for that period. The handwritten caption also suggests that these drawings were made by Ohettoint, a Kiowa inmate in Florida. .. The body of Ohettiont's work allows comparison to these specific images in question. The clearest comparison is with the line of mounted warriors appearing on yellow horses. Ohettoint created various images similar to this one and each is clearly his as indicated by the long necked horses with large hooves, the angularity of the horses' backs, the elongated bodies of the riders, and the facial features, including eye with iris. There is no doublt that Ohettoint created this image. Given its location on the reverse of this drawing and its similarity in facial features, the drawing of the church service is also by Ohettoint. I know of few images recording religious services from the Florida period."
