Description Eastern Great Lakes Pouch; Medium/Materials: Black-dyed deerskin, porcupine quills, silk binding, tin cones and deer hair tassels.; Marks: Inside, loose tag in black ink: "Tobacco pouches of Delaware or "Little Indians" 1793" and on reverse, in black ink: "Mr. John Jackson" [probably the signature of Col. Return Johnathan's Meigs grandson-in-law - see "Meigs Chart of American Ancestry" which lists a "John G. Jackson";

Provenance (1) Colonel Return Jonathan Meigs (1740-1823). Acquired by Col. Meigs between 1781 and 1801. Descended through the family. Placed in Sotheby's auction by Mrs. Hamilton Pike Smith, direct descendant of Col. Meigs.; (2) Sotheby's. New York. Sotheby's, 26 November 1991, Sale 6245, lot 88.; (3) Eugene V. Thaw.;
History Scholarly Attributions: [1] Michael J. Hering, School of American Research - February 17, 1993 - "To date, I have not found much information about Meigs. However, Little Turtle ws the principle chief of all of the Miami tribe Septs in the lands that became Ohio in the mid to late 18th century. His Miami Algonquian name was Michikinigua." [2] Ted Brasser notes that the statements made by Michael J. Hering which link the bag to a Chief Little Turtle of Miami Tribe should be discounted.
