[1] Letter from Hester Davis to GVT - 15 February 1995 - " ... archeologists do not have any evidence that the painted Late Mississippian pottery, such as the dog effigy, was made by the Quapaw. The painted vessels are indeed late in time, possibly proto-historic, but we have yet to know what actually is proto-historic Quapaw pottery at all. Some archeologists, in fact, believe that all the Late Mississippian occupation in eastern Arkansas is prehistoric / protohistoric Tunica!" [2] Letter from Hester Davis to EVT - 15 February 1995 - "... The interpretation of the swirls as water symbols in a regional fertility cult is probably that of the collectors. I know of no evidence of fertility cults in the Mississippi Valley." |
