Exhibit label line3	This painting shows the grounds of the United States Military Academy from Fort Putnam, and looks north up the Hudson River to Newburg. This panoramic view of the site that thwarted attempts by the British Navy to split the 13 colonies was a favorite of many artists during the nineteenth century. Johnson visited the area at least twice, in 1867 and in 1872. The landscape is after an aquatint by Robert Havell titled, "View of West Point, US Military Academy," 1848. The style and perspective of the engraving and the oil are almost identical. Both portray nonexistent rock face cliffs on the eastern highlands of the river. Additionally, the distance between West Point and Newburg is shortened and suggests views of the Hudson that cannot be seen from Fort Putnam.
