Achieving considerable fame in the years following the Civil War (post 1865), Edward Lamson Henry painted with a keen eye for character and quiet humor. He carefully recreated settings from the early 19th century, and in this painting he captured the pangs of childhood through a depiction of a young girl kept in from recess.
Henry studied both in the United States and Europe before becoming one of the youngest members of the National Academy. As a very successful artist of his day, he specialized in historical genre scenes and exhibited at almost every Academy exhibition between 1859 and 1919. His subject matter appealed to the tastes of the late 1800s when people showed interest in a non-industrial, simpler past in literature, poetry, and painting.
