Exhibit label line3 John Brewster, Jr.'s delicate and sensitive renderings of his sitters stand out as some of America's finest early folk portraiture. Brewster, born a deaf-mute, had a talent for painting that was recognized at an early age. After studying under the portrait painter Reverend Joseph Steward, Brewster began his own professional career traveling through Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York. Brewster achieved one of his most successful compositions in this depiction of young Francis O. Watts. Watts later became the first president of the Young Men's Christian Association.
Description Marks: A modern inscription on the verso of the panel to which the canvas is glued reads: "Francis O. Watts by John Brewster, 1805/Signed on stretcher."
