Malcah Zeldis is an acclaimed folk artist of Jewish heritage who creates paintings that are autobiographical and deeply personal. Zeldis lived in Israel for ten years where she began to paint with encouragement from a well-known Israeli artist, Aaron Giladi. In 1958, she returned to New York City, and in 1974, after receiving a degree in education from Brooklyn College, she began her painting career. Her topics include weddings, Jewish religious rituals, street scenes, and historic events and personages.
In this painting, she is the young girl seated on the front porch of her childhood home in Detroit while the adults listen to a radio broadcast of a Tigers game. Zeldis' use of provocative colors and scale heighten the meaning and memory of Hank Greenberg, member of both the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
