Exhibit label line3 Lawrence Lebduska's eye for fantasy, his love of animals, and his exceptional ability to draw and use color, make him one of the more important folk artists of the 20th century. Lebduska was born in Baltimore but returned with his parents to Czechoslovakia where he was trained in the art of stained glass and decorating. Upon his return to the United States, he worked for Elsie de Wolfe painting decorative murals and later opened his own decorating shop. Lebduska favored horses, which he had an opportunity to study up close while living on his uncle's farm in Maryland. Lebduska's bold and realistic paintings were quite popular in the 1930s and 1940s.
