New York State Curricula

Feeding Body and Soul: Haudenosaunee Agriculture in the 19th Century
The learning experiences provided in these published curricula are designed to prepare fourth-grade students to use primary source material to create an interpretive essay. Students will gain experience that will help them answer the document-based portion of the fifth-grade Social Studies test. (Note: Not all of the curricula result in a document-based question.)
In designing these learning experiences, we have provided extensive support for students and teachers. The activities in this packet can be used to prepare students to interpret documents for the essay. Students are provided with many opportunities to practice by comparing and contrasting, interpreting and combining facts and observations from a variety of documents.
