COOPERSTOWN, NY, March 14, 2007—The New York State Historical Association Research Library will be offering two workshops for both the beginner and advanced genealogist. The workshops will be held on Wednesday, April 11, and Thursday, April 12, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Wednesday, April 11, 2007: Researching Your Family History: An Introduction
In this introductory workshop, participants will learn how to conduct family history research using the genealogy records available at the New York State Historical Association Research Library. Major genealogical sources such as vital records, Bible records, and tombstone inscriptions will be highlighted. In addition, Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers will be covered as well as demonstrations on popular online databases.
Thursday, April 12, 2007: Census Records: Your Pathway to Your Ancestors
The first federal census was taken in 1790. During this workshop, participants will learn how to search censuses and use the indexes to them in their family history research. Participants will also learn how to use the census taken by New York State.
The workshops will be taught by Wayne Wright, Associate Director of the Research Library of the New York State Historical Association. He has a Masters of Library Science degree from the State University of New York at Albany. Since 1978 he has assisted genealogical researchers and has helped to build the library’s genealogical collection. He has contributed articles to New York History and authored the "Tracing New York Roots" feature in Heritage magazine. He is also the author of Thornton W. Burgess: A Descriptive Book Bibliography, of which a revised edition was published in 2000. He has compiled several family genealogies including one on the family of James Fenimore Cooper.
Workshops will be held from 10 am to 12 pm in the Research Library. Each session is $10 for NYSHA members and $15 for non-members. Workshop fee includes use of the Research Library for the day of the workshop, handouts, and supplies.
