An exhibition of costumes worn by Louise Homer, Leontyne Price, and Luciano Pavarotti in Aida opens April 1 at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, New York. Heavenly Aida: Highlights from the Metropolitan Opera will also feature jewelry, photographs, and sketches from the Met, saturating visitors with the exotic and Egyptian.
Heavenly Aida brings Giuseppe Verdi's grand opera up close through the striking artistry of costumes and jewelry worn by leading men and women of the Metropolitan Opera. Altogether, approximately 25 works from the Met's many productions of this opera will be on display in the exhibition.
Also opening on April 1, Spellbound: The Metropolitan Opera's Armide brings the flavor of the Met's productions to the Fenimore through costumes, jewelry, watercolor drawings, and photographs, including the costume worn by Renee Fleming in last year's production at the Met. Approximately 15 works from the Met's productions will be on display.
Armide's story of unrequited love is set in the Middle East during the Crusades. Lithographs by David Roberts complement the Fenimore exhibition. According to Paul D'Ambrosio, NYSHA president, "British artist David Roberts painted the Holy Land in the 1830s. Lithographs of his paintings showed Jerusalem very much unchanged from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century, giving an accurate sense of what the landscape of Armide looked like."
As part of an innovative collaboration, the exhibitions coincide with the Glimmerglass Festival's presentation of Aida, which runs July 7 to August 25, and Armide, running from July 21 to August 23. Preliminary sketches, mockups, and preview photos of the Festival's stage set are included in the exhibitions.
Listed in USA Today as one of the Top 10 places to see art in small cities, the Fenimore Art Museum offers spectacular art to match its spectacular setting on the shore of Otsego Lake in scenic Cooperstown, New York.
