"The Instruction of Young Ladies: Arts from Private Girls’ Schools and Academies in Early America" Catalog

This catalogue focuses on endeavors that rose to the level of art and form a body of work that is significant in the history of American art. It also explores the history of private female education in the United States and the key role of women educators in the growth of this country's educational system. The bulk of the material dates between the Revolution and the outbreak of the Civil War, although a few choice pieces predate independence.

2016 Americana Symposium

This year’s symposium features leading scholars and experts in folk art presenting talks on the themes and ideas explored in the museum’s new fall exhibition The Instruction of Young Ladies: Arts from Private Girls’ Schools and Academies in Early America, part of the Jane Katcher Americana Series.  The symposium is free and open to the public. The Fenimore marks the 212th anniversary of one of the most infamous duels in history with this new exhibit focusing on the letters between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr that led to the tragic confrontation. Many of these original documents from the museum's collection are now on view.
